Ends on March 15, 2019

Feel like you know good writing when you read it? The Ageless Authors 2019 writing contest for 65+ writers needs judges and we want to thank you in return.

Our previous  writing competitions were wildly popular and we need judges for our 2019 competition. Become a volunteer judge and we will promote you and your book(s) on the Ageless Authors website and Facebook page. (Details on promotion further down the page.)

Be part of the most unique writing contest going and read work from some of the most “seasoned” writers. Our submissions are of highest quality and a joy to read and evaluate. To be a judge, you should

  1. Be willing and able to judge other writers' work, whether fiction, non-fiction or poetry.
  2. Be comfortable working on the computer. Judging will be done on Submittable and we will give instructions.
  3. Have the time to read and evaluate submissions.

While all authors submitting work are 65+, there is no age requirement for judges. Anyone with an appreciation for good writing is eligible. Here is how the judging process works:

DEADLINES:

Recruiting and enrolling Judges – Now until we have all the judges we need.

CATEGORIES FOR 2019

This year, judges will be asked to read and evaluate fiction and/or non-fiction from one of four prose categories or poetry. You select the category you prefer and we will attempt to get you in that category. If, however, a category is “short suited,” we ask you to understand that we must put you in another category.

The categories this year are

Category #1 -- MEMOIR WRITING

Category #2 -- HUMOR WRITING

Category #3 -- ADVENTURE WRITING

Category #4 -- ROMANCE WRITING

Category #5 -- POETRY

Tell us the category you would like most, what type of writing speaks to you and that you feel competent to review and evaluate. Each prose category is limited to essays or short stories of no more than 3,500 words each. Last year, most submissions averaged between 1,500 and 2,000 words each.

LEVELS OF JUDGING (Take your pick!)

There are two levels of judging:  You can request participation in either or both levels based on your availability. Our goal is to make this process fun for you. We should have enough judges so that no one is overworked.

ENTRY LEVEL JUDGES

Self-select category you prefer. Be willing to accept and read at least 15 submissions of the various types within two weeks.

A Category Team Leader will assign submissions to you and follow up. Contact your team leader for any problems.

Your Team Leader will send you an Excel file with the following:

Title of the submission

Five to seven areas of evaluation for the submission

Points range for each area of evaluation. Total the points.

Accept or decline for the next level of judging.

Area to make comments, offer suggestions to submitters on improving stories.

SEMI-FINAL LEVEL JUDGES

Self-select the category you prefer. Be willing to review and evalute at least 15 submissions of the various types within two weeks.

Category Team Leader will assign accepted submissions. Place submissions in order of preference for final judging.

Make comments to help final judging, offer suggestions to submitters on improving stories to share with submitters.

FINAL JUDGING

Will be a third level of judging, but it will be the Category Team Leaders working in conjunction with Publisher to select winners in each category. Decision of the Publisher is final. Will announce winners by April 30, 2019.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT FOR JUDGING

Judges will be acknowledged in the 2017 Anthology and on the Ageless Authors website and Facebook pages. Can send out press releases to judge's local media, promoting judge, books or other media offered by judge and/or events engaged in by judge.
