Feel like you know good writing when you read it? The Ageless Authors 2019 writing contest for 65+ writers needs judges and we want to thank you in return.
Our previous writing competitions were wildly popular and we need judges for our 2019 competition. Become a volunteer judge and we will promote you and your book(s) on the Ageless Authors website and Facebook page. (Details on promotion further down the page.)
Be part of the most unique writing contest going and read work from some of the most “seasoned” writers. Our submissions are of highest quality and a joy to read and evaluate. To be a judge, you should
- Be willing and able to judge other writers' work, whether fiction, non-fiction or poetry.
- Be comfortable working on the computer. Judging will be done on Submittable and we will give instructions.
- Have the time to read and evaluate submissions.
While all authors submitting work are 65+, there is no age requirement for judges. Anyone with an appreciation for good writing is eligible. Here is how the judging process works:
Recruiting and enrolling Judges – Now until we have all the judges we need.
CATEGORIES FOR 2017
For last year's contest, we split fiction, non-fiction and poetry into their own categories. Judging was more technical. This year, judges will be asked to read fiction, non-fiction and poetry together from one of three categories or prompts. You select the category you prefer and we will attempt to get you in that category. (If, however, a category is “short suited,” we reserve the right to put you in another category.)
The standard of excellence is based more on which submissions you enjoy. You vote on the submissions that most affect you. We place a high priority on work that is warm, humorous, compassionate or inspiring. We don't want work that is purely factual -- news stories. Our approach should be more fun for the judges this year.
Category #1 – MILITARY MEMORIES
Tales of war or peace, in the field or on the home front.
Category #2 – DANG, I WISH I HADN’T DONE THAT!
Regrets, I’ve had a few. And, some are worth writing about.
Category #3 – PARENTS, FOR BETTER OR WORSE
Lessons learned or left behind. Tell us a story of something your parents taught you or failed to teach. What does that mean to you today?
LEVELS OF JUDGING (Take your pick!)
There are two levels of judging: You can request participation in either or both levels based on your availability. Our goal is to make this process fun for you. We will have enough judges so that no one is overworked.
ENTRY LEVEL JUDGES
Category – Self-select category you prefer. Be willing to accept and read at least 10x submissions of the various types within two weeks.
A Category Team Leader will assign submissions to you and follow up. Contact your team leader for any problems.
On Submittable, judge each submission with a simple “Thumbs Up” (acceptable) or “Thumbs Down” (unacceptable). We encourage you to leave a constructive comment on each submission that will be read by the author, such as "outstanding dialogue," "surprising ending," "need to correct misspellings, grammar errors”, “technical page formatting problems”, etc. Authors appreciate feedback that is given in a constructive spirit.
SEMI-FINAL LEVEL JUDGES
Self-select the category you prefer. Be willing and able to accept at least 10x submissions of the various types within two weeks.
Category Team Leader will assign submissions. Say you have a total of 17 "Thumbs Up" submissions. Judge each submission with a ranking of 1 (lowest, barely made the list) to 5 (highest, best) via the Submittable website.
Make notes for entries to help final judging and they may be shared with authors.
Will be a third level of judging, but it will be the Category Team Leaders working in conjunction with Publisher to select winners in each category. Decision of the Publisher is final. Will announce winners by February 1, 2018.
